A Brief History of Fort Lauderdale
Early Fort Lauderdale
The Seminole indians first came to Broward County in the 1820's. Around the same time a handful of white planters also arrived. An early arrival was a family named Cooley. Mr Cooley intended to grow coontie, a plant whose roots provided a flour like food source. The massacre of Mrs Cooley, the children and the children's tutor while Mr Cooley was away from home brought about the Second Seminole War. Major Willaim Lauderdale led a detachment of Tennessee Volunteers to the area. Three forts were constructed in the area and of course it is from there the name of Fort Lauderdale was taken. By the 1890's there was a small established community along the New River with Stranahan's Trading Post being the center of activities. In 1896 the Florida East Coast Railroad was extended through Fort Lauderdale bring people from all parts of the United Stated. Incorporation took place in 1911,(in Dade County) prior to the creation of Broward County. In 1915 Broward County was created from parts of Dade and Palm Beach Counties. The first bridge to the beach (a barrier island) was Las Olas in 1917. Prior to that time access was by boat.
